Heavy-duty Rack Load and Safety Guide

How to understand per-level load and uniformly distributed load, how load is calculated, overload risks and safe-use notes.

GUIDE 01

Understanding Rack Load Concepts

Per-level load and uniformly distributed load. The rated load on a rack is usually the uniformly distributed load per level. Concentrated load (goods piled in one spot) puts more pressure on beams and uprights and should be calculated with a more conservative value.

Load calculation. The specifications of uprights, beams and shelves are jointly calculated from span, level spacing and load. The longer the beam span and the higher the load, the larger the steel section required — do not rely only on the per-level rated value.

Safety factor. A proper design reserves a safety margin beyond the rated load. Actual loading should stay within the rated range, taking into account dynamic factors such as forklift impact and eccentric goods.

GUIDE 02

Overload Risks and Safe Use

Overloading or uneven distribution can cause beam bending and upright instability, bringing the risk of goods falling. Load goods according to the design capacity, place them evenly, and post load-limit signs in visible positions.

Regularly check whether uprights are vertical, beams are deformed, connecting clips are loose and column protectors are intact. Handling any abnormality promptly is an important part of safe rack use.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about rack selection, load capacity, installation and warehouse planning.

How much can a heavy-duty rack carry per level?

A common per-level load is about 500-2000 kg, subject to specifications and drawings. Uniformly distributed load and concentrated load are different; concentrated load must be calculated with a more conservative value.

How to avoid rack overload?

Load goods according to the design capacity and place them evenly; install column protectors and load-limit signs; regularly check whether beams are deformed and uprights are vertical.

Why can rack beams not be interchanged?

Beam specifications are selected by span and load. Mixing them causes local overload and affects the overall safety of the rack.

Do racks need regular inspection?

It is recommended to regularly inspect uprights, beams, connecting clips and the floor; handle any deformation or looseness promptly to ensure safe use.
